THE ORIGINS OF THE TECHNOLOGY THAT CHANGED AN ENTIRE INDUSTRY
Jawbone was founded as AliphCom, Inc. in San Francisco in 1999 to commercialize the doctoral thesis of Dr. Gregory Burnett, who studied radiofrequency vibration detectors and their use on human subjects at the University of California at Davis. Dr. Burnett developed a method using two microphones and a radiofrequency vibrometer that significantly reduced the environmental noise transmitted from a microphone operating in very loud environments. With DARPA funding over the next seven years, Aliph, for short, developed and produced several vibrometers and ultra-high-noise-environment headsets for the U.S. military. The technology designed for these environments was adapted for commercial use, employing a more conventional acoustic-based vibration detector and two conventional omnidirectional microphones.
JAWBONE’S FIRST NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONE
The technology known as NoiseShield™ debuted in 2004 and then, with significant improvements, grew into NoiseAssassin™. These were the first successful environmental noise suppression algorithms and allowed their users to be heard clearly in the presence of any noise, including wind, music, speech, and street noise. Aliph's first consumer product, Jawbone Wired, was launched. In collaboration with renowned designer Yves Behar and using NoiseShield™, Aliph produced the first noise-canceling headset that prioritized aesthetics and functionality —it had beauty and brains. While the Jawbone headset garnered critical praise for its stylish design and outstanding acoustic performance, its reliance on wired connectivity limited its appeal.
First Jawbone® Bluetooth® Headset
Aliph shed wires and its old name, capitalizing on the burgeoning Bluetooth® technology. Jawbone®, now a brand, soared after releasing Jawbone Air™, a slimmed-down, wireless version of their successful noise-canceling headset. This combination of superior design and engineering excellence propelled the company to the forefront of the industry.
Beauty and Brains Takes Over the World
Critical acclaim and sales followed the even slimmer and better performing Jawbone® Air™ 2. Jawbone's successes continued with the Prime™, Era™, and Icon™ headsets, variations of which were still selling briskly in 2016. The solid engineering and beautiful yet functional design of the Jawbone headsets launched an entire industry, resulting in the first billion-dollar audio startup in the world.
Enter the Jambox™ Bluetooth® Speakers
In 2010, Jawbone did it again and revolutionized the world by releasing the Jambox™ portable speaker, the first wildly successful Bluetooth® speaker with catchy looks and unmatched vibrant sound. The Jambox™ Mini and the Big Jambox™, both critical and commercial successes, followed in various colors and original "carved" patterns.
End of an Era - and the Beginning of Another
A pivot away from stylish, highly engineered audio into wearable devices posed challenges that ultimately led the company to cease its fantastic run as one of the leaders in the high-end audio market. Years later, a new opportunity arose as DGL Group acquired the brand. With a commitment to revitalizing its award-winning designs and exceptional acoustic engineering, Jawbone regrouped and prepared a resurgence.
Jawbone® is Back with the Original Team
The DGL Group secured another outstanding Yves Behar design and rehired the original Chief Scientist Greg Burnett to revive the Jawbone brand and tradition of combining beauty and comfort with exceptional audio performance. Get ready for a stylish comeback with the launch of the all-new Jambuds™—True Wireless Stereo Earbuds with adaptive noise cancellation and exceptional audio fidelity.
